Some or all of the PhD opportunities in this programme have funding attached. Applications for this programme are welcome from suitably qualified candidates worldwide. Funding may only be available to a limited set of nationalities and you should read the full programme details for further information. It is available to citizens of a number of European countries including the UK. In most cases this will include all EU nationals. However full funding may not be available to all applicants and you should read the full programme details for further information.

You will usually complete taught courses in your first year sometimes equivalent to a Masters in your subject before choosing and proposing your research project. You will then research and submit your thesis in the normal way. PhD Research Projects are advertised opportunities to examine a pre-defined topic or answer a stated research question. Some projects may also provide scope for you to propose your own ideas and approaches. This project is in competition for funding with other projects. Usually the project which receives the best applicant will be successful. Unsuccessful projects may still go ahead as self-funded opportunities.

Applications for the project are welcome from all suitably qualified candidates, but potential funding may be restricted to a limited set of nationalities. You should check the project and department details for more information. This project has funding attached for UK and EU students, though the amount may depend on your nationality. Non-EU students may still be able to apply for the project provided they can find separate funding.

If plagiarism is suspected in your thesis, the matter will be referred to the relevant Director of Graduate Studies DGS. They will thoroughly investigate the claim and may call you for interview. As part of the investigation, text-matching software such as iThenticate or TurnItIn may be used to scan the thesis but the thesis will not be saved to any text-matching software databases. If at this point there is no evidence of a breach of the regulations, no further disciplinary action will be taken although you still may be required to make changes to your thesis.

However, if it is concluded that a breach of the regulations may have occurred, the DGS will refer the matter to the Proctors. Your examiners may recommend that you complete minor corrections before they recommend award of the degree. Your examiners will provide you with a list of the required corrections. If you have not received the list of corrections within two weeks of the viva, then you should contact the Graduate Studies Assistant for your subject area.

The University expects that these minor corrections will be completed to the satisfaction of your internal examiner within one month of being issued. If, for exceptional reasons, additional time is needed you may apply for an additional one month by submitting a copy of form GSO. If you fail to complete your corrections within the time allowed your name will be removed from the Graduate Register and a reinstatement application will be required.

Corrections must be made and submitted within six months of the letter confirming the major corrections, although Examination Boards may grant an extension of up to three months on receipt of a GSO. It is not permitted for a thesis to be submitted directly to the examiners. Candidates whose thesis is referred will be required to provide at resubmission a separate report indicating the specific changes made to the revised thesis; the word limit of which has been stipulated by divisional boards.

The outcome types, time limits for changes and report lengths for each of the research degrees are summarised in the tables below. Students not passing the examination at the first attempt will be entitled to a second attempt. Such applications should be made through your Graduate Studies Assistant. In order to have your degree conferred at a graduation ceremony you must submit one hard-bound copy of the final version of your thesis including any approved minor corrections for deposit in the Bodleian Library. You must submit forms GSO. Information regarding this process can be found on the Bodleian website and will be sent with your result letter.

If required, you may apply for dispensation from consultation of thesis using form GSO. If either of these submissions remain outstanding, shortly before your degree ceremony you will receive emails reminding you to complete these submissions at least five days in advance of your ceremony. Your form should be submitted, signed by all required parties, four to six weeks prior to submitting your thesis.

The typewritten part of the thesis must be saved as a pdf. Your thesis must be submitted in English, apart from quotations and recognised technical formulae, or where the Divisional or Faculty Board has determined otherwise.

Your thesis may be scanned with text-matching software either iThenticate or TurnItIn should the examiners question the authenticity of the work, but such theses will NOT be saved to the software databases. Pages of the thesis must be numbered. Include an abstract with each copy of your thesis generally after the Contents page in the thesis.

Include a title page with each copy of your thesis, giving your full name, college, thesis title and your degree. The main body of your thesis should be in double spacing with quotations and footnotes in single spacing. Portrait would usually be expected, landscape may be permitted by agreement with the relevant board. Select an easily readable font, such as Times New Roman or Arial. Font size 12pt is preferred, but a minimum font size 11pt is recommended for text and 10pt for footnotes.

You should allow a margin of 3 to 3. Where they are given at the end of each chapter or at the end of the thesis, two separate unbound copies of footnotes should also be presented, for the convenience of the examiners. Fine Art candidates offering studio practice as part of their submission must submit, together with the written portion of their thesis, documentation in appropriate form of the exhibition or portfolio of works to be examined.
